A balanced life looks different to each individual person and can be difficult to find. We all juggle shifting routines, unexpected changes in our day and the challenge of focusing our attention on the things that matter most – both inside and outside of work. For some of us, being a parent adds an extra layer of complexity to finding our balance in life and work. The daily unpredictability of a family can turn a calm morning into chaos without warning. Yet somewhere within that unpredictability, you can find a rhythm – one that works for your family and your career. Whatever your circumstances, finding a rhythm that supports both your life and your career can make all the difference.

Over the past year, I have been refining my sense of rhythm and balance in life, and have found support working in an industry and for a company that understands true flexibility. MedComms is a dynamic, creative and constantly evolving industry. Project timelines shift, new evidence emerges and plans move as quickly as the science behind them. I once assumed that fast-paced work and flexible working hours were incompatible but I’ve now realised that with trust and communication in a team, flexibility in work schedules actually enables fast-paced work.

What I value most about MedComms is its foundation in collaboration, empathy and clear communication. Those qualities naturally support flexible working, making it possible to progress professionally while navigating the realities of raising a small child. My growth hasn’t had to pause simply because life outside work is busy – instead, my career and home-life coexist in a way that feels sustainable.

Condensing my hours across four days has been one of the most valuable changes I’ve made in my career. It gives me one dedicated day a week with my son, and that time restores the energy I can bring back into my work. On my working days, I’m fully present for clients and colleagues; and on our day together, I can switch into family-mode properly and reset. That balance has become the anchor of my week and my major source of clarity and motivation.

As I look to the year ahead, I’m grateful for the balance that allows me to thrive both at work and at home. Flexibility isn’t just a benefit; it’s what makes this career fulfilling, motivating and genuinely enjoyable. I end each week with meaningful time with my son and start the next with real momentum in my role – that’s what a balanced life looks like to me.
